Safe Winter Driving Tactics Everyone Should Know

November 1, 2019

As we move from Fall to Winter, it is important to refresh on the best way to safely maneuver the hazards that come with the change in seasons. As it gets colder, the weather hazards that need to be looked out for include ice, snow, sleet, and slush. Making sure you’re prepared in the following ways will help protect you and your family as you make your way to your daily and holiday activities.

1. Be Prepared

In addition to your standard emergency kit, it is important to add cold weather safety items to it. Make sure you have cold-weather clothes and gear in your car, such as extra food and water, ice scraper, blankets, medications, handwarmers, cat litter or sand, and more. In addition to being prepared with gear, keeping your tires well inflated and at least a half a tank of gas at all times.

2. Winter Weather Driving

Making sure you’re ready to drive in the snow or icy weather is to try and practice during the daytime. Ensuring that you’re prepared in the event of a skid, slide, or fishtail during day or night. Making sure you’re allowing ample space between cars and driving slow will help you safely maneuver in ice and snow. Also, remember, water on top of ice or just ice will always create even more hazardous conditions.

3. Planning Your Trips

Planning ahead is going to help make sure you’re ready in case of an emergency. Check the weather, traffic, and plan out your route ahead of time. This helps to make sure you’re not caught off guard by the weather or by where you’re headed. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your location so you don’t feel rushed and can drive as carefully as you can. If you’re able to, let a family member or friend know the route you’re taking to your destination that way if there is an issue, someone knows where to look for you and your vehicle.
